At Response Motors, we specialize in selling both new, used, and classic cars. One of our favorites has always been the Porsche 911. This car is a true classic and has been around since 1963. The 911 has a rich history and continues to be one of the most popular sports cars on the market today.
History of the Porsche 911
The Porsche 911 has always remained true to the original concept of a high-performance sports car. It offers excellent handling, great looks and an impressive power plant. The first generation models were introduced in 1963 as an answer to the demand for more sporty vehicles, including cars like the Jaguar E-Type (produced by British automaker Jaguar) and the Aston Martin DB-series.
The 911 has a Rear-engine, rear-wheel drive design that is often credited as the original supercar. The engine is located in the back of the car and drives the rear wheels. This gives the car great balance and handling, allowing it to take corners at high speeds with ease. While many feature all-wheel drive now, this is the initial way they were produced.
The original Porsche 911 was actually called the 901. However, due to a trademark issue with Peugeot, the car was renamed to 911. The 901 was first shown to the public at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1963. It was an instant hit and production began later that year.
The 911 was available as a coupe or convertible and came with a choice of either 2 or 4-doors. It had a 2.0-liter flat-6 engine that produced 130 horsepower. This allowed the car to reach speeds of up to 150 mph.
The 911 quickly gained a reputation for being one of the best sports cars on the market. Many racing drivers used it on the track and it soon became known as the best handling car of its time.
In 1965, Porsche introduced the 911S with a larger engine and improved suspension system. The S stood for Super and this model was basically an improvement on the original design. A Targa version (considered as one of the most beautiful cars ever built) came out in 1967 that featured removable roof panels. A racing version of the 911S won a very impressive class victory at LeMans in 1967.
The Porsche 911 was officially introduced by Volkswagen-Audi AG (who owned 80% of the company) as their new flagship car for its entry into Formula One motor racing. The original plan was to develop a single-seat racecar that would be used as a rolling test bed for new engine technology.
However, the cost of such an endeavor proved to be too much and the project was eventually scrapped. However, the 911 Carrera RSR was developed and went on to win many races in its class.
In 1972, Porsche introduced the first turbocharged model of the 911. This car was called the 911 Turbo and it had a whopping 260 horsepower. It was an instant hit and became known as one of the best performance cars on the market.
The original Porsche 911 lasted until 1989 when it was replaced by the newer, more modern design of the Porsche 911 Carrera. However, many people still consider the classic models to be some of the most beautiful cars ever made. Today, there are many classic models on the market that can be purchased for extremely reasonable prices.
Over the years, the 911 has seen many different changes. The engine size and power have increased, as well as the overall size of the car. In 2004, Porsche released the Carrera GT – a limited edition model that was even more powerful than previous versions.
Today, there are many different types of 911s available for sale. Whether you are looking for a classic model or a newer version, there is something available for everyone.
